Description

1996 Penfolds Bin 389 cabernet shiraz. Rated 97Pts by Jeremy Oliver, this is a classic Bin 389.

Penfolds Bin 389 was created by Max Schubert, (the creator of Penfolds Grange) and was first released in 1960.  Penfolds Bin 389 is a classic South Australian red wine, it is a much loved Australian wine which shows all the hallmarks and benefits of cross varietal / multi regional blending.  Penfolds Bin 389 is known affectionately as ‘Poor Mans Grange’ or by the Americans as ‘Baby Grange’; the wine is the beneficiary of second use Grange barrels and has a similar ethereal and lasting quality at a fraction of the price.  First made in 1960, this was the wine that helped to build Penfolds solid reputation with red wine drinkers.  Penfolds Bin 389 is a blend of Cabernet and Shiraz with the cabernet sauvignon providing structure and the shiraz providing richness.  Penfolds Bin 389 combines the elegance of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness of Shiraz and demonstrates the traditional Penfolds’ trademark – perfect balance between fruit and oak, to produce a wine with rich varietal characters and cellaring potential. All these features combine to give Penfolds Bin 389 its reputation for quality and value for money.

Winemaker comments by Penfolds Rewards of Patience, Sixth edition, 2008.

The 1996 Penfolds Bin 389 is deep red in colour.  The nose is expressive with all the hallmarks of a ‘Baby Grange’; lovely inky blackberry, meaty, cedar, graphite aromas.  The palate is dense, generous, rich, sweet-fruit flavours, underlying malt oak and slinky, chocolaty tannins. This is a great vintage with incredible fruit power and energy.

After the drought conditions in 1995, much needed rains replenished the soils during the winter across most of South Australia. The first half of the growing season was dry and cool, allowing the fruit to set and mature slowly. The last two months of the season warmed to bring in physically mature, ripe complex fruit.

MATURATION Aged 14 months in new (25%) and used American oak.
