Description

The 1982 Penfolds Grange is a good Penfolds Grange but it is not regarded as one of the best vintages. Bottles appear regularly on the secondary wine market and it’s probably a Grange that should be consumed sooner rather than later. When released the 1982 Penfolds grange RRP was around $40.00 a bottle. Bottles in excellent condition can fetch as high as $1250.00 in 2022 for those chasing a 40th birthday gift.  If you managed to secure some 1982 Penfolds Grange upon release and they’re in excellent condition, you’ve done very well for yourself.

During the Rewards of Patience this wine was described as deep red brick in colour. Perfumed red cherry/tea leaf/ redcurrant/ cedar flavours. Smooth, fleshy, rich and a plush wine with sweet cassis/damson plum/red cherry/mocha flavours and slinky fine chocolaty tannins. An idiosyncratic Grange at the peak of its development.

The 1982 Penfolds Grange is a blend of shiraz (94%) and cabernet sauvignon (6%). Fruit used to make the 1982 Penfolds grange was sourced from Penfolds’ own and famous Kalimna Vineyard, which is located in the Barossa Valley, other vineyards in the Barossa Valley, Magill Estate, Clare Valley and Modbury Vineyard (Adelaide). Conditions were, a mild growing season followed by a hot vintage. Most 1982 Penfolds wines have a particular vintage character, often described as “exaggerated ripe fruit”.

Comments: Most 1982 Penfolds reds share a particular vintage character: a quite distinctive richness and fleshiness of fruit. This vintage of Grange rated 96/100 points by Robert Parker in 1990. Max Schubert also considered it “a very good wine”.
