Description

The 1985 Penfolds Grange is another good Grange but it isn’t seen as one of the “A” Graders. The Penfolds Grange style is based on ripe shiraz fruit and stylish American oak in fine harmony, Penfolds do it so well. Penfolds Grange is a rich, full bodied wine, most vintages cellar comfortably for 25 years or more.

The 1985 Penfolds Grange was tasted during the Rewards of Patience – sixth edition – and described as deep crimson in colour. Aromas of ground coffee/cedar/plum/dark chocolate/herb garden with some leather/walnut notes. The palate was described as richly concentrated with plum/leather/dark chocolate flavours and sinewy/savoury dry tannins. The wine finishes firm and tight. The 1985 Penfolds Grange was described as a well balanced wine with plenty of fruit power.

The 1985 Penfolds Grange is made from shiraz (99%) and cabernet sauvignon (1%). Fruit used to make the 1985 Penfolds Grange was sourced from the Kalimna and Modbury Vineyard’s, and other vineyards located in Barossa Valley, Clare Valley. A cool to mild growing season and vintage, rain late in the season delayed picking.

The 1985 Penfolds Grange was rated 90/100 by Robert Parker Jnr in 1990 and 92/100 by Australian Wine Critic Jeremy Oliver.
