Description

1993 Penfolds Grange Bin 95 shiraz is a good Grange but it isn’t considered a great Grange. It was still the best wine made by Penfolds in 1993, only the best fruit from the 1993 vintage was used to make this wine.

The 1993 Penfolds Grange is deep crimson in colour. Fragrant cassis/prune aromas with silage/graphite and mint notes. it’s generously proportioned, juicy fresh but robust palate with redcurrant/prune/smoky/graphite flavours and dry tannins. It finishes grippy, chalky firm. Fruit for the 1993 Penfolds Grange was sourced from the Barossa Valley and Coonawarra wine regions and the Kalimna Vineyard.  Whilst it was a wet growing season, warmer and drier conditions followed resulting in late, but good quality vintage fruit. The Coonawarra Wine Region experienced an Indian summer which delivered fully ripened fruit. The 1993 Penfolds Grange was matured in new American oak for 18 months.

During the Rewards of Patience – sixth edition, the 1993 Penfolds Grange was described by Campbell Mattinson enjoyable, with fresh aromatics; inviting leafy, ash tomatoes, violets and black currents. Seems quite to be cabernet in style with an atypical Grange flavour profile. There is excellent juiciness and freshness.
