Description

2005 Penfolds Grange Bin 95 is a very good Grange which just falls short of “A” Grade status on the secondary wine market for interest, price and as a collectable Grange. The 2005 Penfolds Grange does however sit comfortably along side the 1999 Penfolds Grange and the 2001 Penfolds Grange, which are both excellent Grange’s, and they do create some interest on the secondary wine market and with collectors.

Penfolds Grange is an immensely concentrated, fully ripe and intensely flavoured wine. It is a unique Australian style that has been recognised for many many years as one of the most consistent of the world’s great wines. The Penfolds Grange style is the original and most powerful expression of Penfolds multi region, multi district, multi vineyard blending philosophy and let’s not forget about that new American oak which Penfolds does so well.

“A small 2005 vintage Penfolds Grange make – understandably no quality compromise.”

“With its DNA at 88% Barossa, this Penfolds Grange belies most 2005 vintage-chart implications.”

The 2005 Penfolds Grange is made from shiraz 96% and cabernet sauvignon 4%. Fruit for the 2005 Penfolds Grange was sourced from vineyards located in the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra wine regions. The 2005 vintage was rated 8/10, it was a good vintage. Plenty of rain throughout winter and into early spring allowed for good soil moistures and filled up dams. Conditions throughout the growing season were mild, followed by a late, dry summer and autumn enabling fruit to ripen nicely. Harvest was two weeks early and warm, dry conditions during the harvest period produced grapes of exceptional flavour and structure. The 2005 Penfolds Grange was matured for 18 months in 100% new American oak.
