2017 Tyrrell’s Belford Single Vineyard Hunter Semillon. Boy oh boy WoWee, what a wine! The 2017 Hunter Semillon was one of the best vintages in recent memory and has produced Hunter Semillon wines of extremely high quality. Winter and Spring saw rain allowing the vines constant access to water. When the summer of 2017 rolled in the weather was warmer resulting in fruit that was in near perfect condition and ripeness when harvested.
The Belford Vineyard is located about 10kms from the winery and is lease by Tyrrell’s from the Elliott Family. It was planted in 1933, so these vines are very old and the soil is said to be very fine, like talcum powder.
During the wine making process, after a relatively cool fermentation, the wine spent minimal time on yeast lees before being bottled early to maintain its freshness, the wine saw no oak whatsoever.
The 2017 Tyrrell’s Belford Semillon has been awarded some very high scores from leading wine critics, we are talking 96+ points, the same score as the 2017 Tyrrell’s Vat 1 Semillon. It should be drinking for 20 years or more, it needs a bit of time in the bottle. 11% alc/vol.
